I’m excited to announce that I’ve created a new alumni sub-group on WeChat for learning Cantonese!
This group is a space for us to share learning methods and self-study materials.
Here’s what we’ll focus on:
- Daily Vocabulary Building: We’ll learn a new Cantonese word and its uses every day. We’ll start with common verbs (like 揾, 劈, 篤), then move on to adjectives (like 衰, 靚, 嗦), and so on. This structured approach will help us build a solid foundation.
- Cultural Immersion: We’ll explore real-life scenarios where Cantonese is used, giving us a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s vibrant culture.
- Interactive Activities: We’ll organize fun Cantonese social gatherings, like online mock job interviews and outdoor hikes, at upcoming alumni events.
Tips for Success:
- Open Mind: Approach Cantonese with a relaxed attitude and an open mind. Embrace its unique features and cultural nuances.
- Small Steps: Start with learning a few words each day. These small wins will keep you motivated and build your confidence.
- Systematic Learning: Our learning materials will be concise and well-organized, making it easy to review and build upon your knowledge.
- Multimedia Aids: We’ll use images, audio, and other media to help you remember words and their usage more effectively.
- Bilingual Support: Materials will include English translations to benefit both native English speakers and Chinese speakers who may be more familiar with Mandarin. This approach also offers the bonus of improving your English!
Important Notes:
- This learning group is completely free of charge.
- Our focus is on casual learning and sharing, not formal instruction.
- While our materials will use traditional Chinese characters, you can communicate in the group using either simplified or traditional characters.
